What is Sexual Violence?

Sexual violence includes domestic violence, sexual harassment, incest, stalking, or any other type of unwanted sexual contact. Sexual assault, sexual abuse and rape are specific legal terms to describe types of unwanted sexual contact. The wording can get confusing because different states have their own terms. But what shouldn’t be confusing is this: it is never acceptable for someone to touch you in a sexual manner without your total consent.

If you have been the victim of sexual assault, it can be helpful to know that you are not alone and that you can heal from this experience. However, experiencing a sexual assault can lead to PTSD, depression, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts so it’s critical to get emotional support.

How can I get help?

If you are in immediate danger go to a safe place and call 911.

If you have been sexually assaulted, it’s important to get medical attention and to report it to the police. If you have any questions or need support call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673 or chat online.

Anytime you are in crisis you can call, text, or chat with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.

Before when I met my ex, I was also in this situation, like psychological violence.
