What is Sexuality?
There’s no doubt that gay rights have come a long way in the past ten years. But just because many celebrities have come out and gay marriage is legal in more states than not, doesn’t mean that homophobia is a thing of the past.
Many young adults need emotional support to come out to their friends and family. In fact, young adults who are gay or are questioning their sexuality are four times as likely to attempt suicide. LGBTQ young adults are also much more likely to be the victim of bullying.
The Trevor Project has created a fantastic resource for young adults who are on the brink of accepting their sexuality called Coming Out As You. As a straight ally, it’s important to understand how to be supportive to friends or family members who are gay. Start by learning the lingo so you can speak about sexual orientation in a way that isn’t stigmatizing.
How can I get support?
