Self-harm is something that I struggled with for a long time. For about two years straight, I cut myself nearly every day, and sometimes it felt like that was the only thing I had. My drive to be perfect was one thing that kept me doing it all the time. When I wasn’t perfect, I would cut myself as punishment, and soon it became more enjoyable than a punishment.
Self-harm is like that. Whether you believe it or not, self-harm has addictive qualities, just like drugs and alcohol, and can actually release certain chemicals in your brain to make you feel better, or so you think. Other times people do it to wash away the emotional pain and physical pain, because for a lot of people, that’s easier.
